As the name suggests simultaneous interpretation is when the interpreter simultaneously interprets the main speaker without interrupting him/her. This form of interpretation is mainly used for conferences, large meetings and in some instances, court hearings, whereby the interpreter operates from a soundproof booth. Speaking into a microphone, the interpretation is delivered without interruption or interference with the audience. As the interpreter talks, the audience listens through headsets.
Understandably, this style of interpretation is an intensive activity. For this reason, simultaneous translators generally operate in pairs, replacing each other every 25 to 30 minutes.
